The 1,000 Hours Outside Challenge

Tiny People University’s Guide to Outdoor Fun Year-Round (Even in the Texas Heat)

Hello, Tiny People families!

You know we’re all about getting those little feet outside and exploring, but we know it’s not always easy to commit to the 1,000 Hours Outside Challenge. (I mean, who has time to track 1,000 hours when you’ve got toddler tantrums, snack requests, and endless piles of laundry, right?) But here at Tiny People University, we’re ALL for making outdoor time fun, even if it feels like a hefty goal.

The challenge is simple: spend 1,000 hours outside each year. That’s about 2.7 hours every day. Sure, it sounds like a lot, but when you break it down by season (and throw in a little creativity), you’ll see it’s totally doable—even here in Montgomery County, where summer often feels like stepping into a sauna.

Benefits

The benefits of the 1,000 Hours Outside Challenge are huge: outdoor time boosts kids’ health, helps develop motor skills, and encourages curiosity and imagination (just to name a few!). Plus, it’s a great way for families to bond and recharge. And the best part? There’s an app to help you track those hours, so you can easily log your outdoor adventures and stay motivated.

So, grab your sunscreen, water bottles, and phone (so you can log in those hours, of course)! Let’s break down the 1,000 Hours Outside challenge by season, Tiny People style!

Winter

Mom always said “start where you are and use what you’ve got.” So let’s start with winter! And let’s be real: winter in Montgomery County is a whole different ballgame compared to places with actual snow. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make the most of it—especially when the weather’s chilly enough to actually put on those cute winter coats that have been sitting in the back of the closet all year.

So, while we might not be building snowmen in our front yards, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy some outdoor hours before heading back inside for hot cocoa and blanket cuddles.

  • Become a Tourist in Your Town: When temperatures drop and the days get shorter, it can feel impossible to get outside. But don’t let the chill keep you indoors—bundle up and explore the beauty that our community and nearby neighbors have to offer! A change of scenery can do wonders, and there’s plenty to discover, even in the cooler months. The Woodlands Farmers Market at Grogan’s Mill is open year-round, and even in the cooler months, you can find fresh produce, handmade goods, and winter treats. Take a stroll through the market with your cozy coat and grab some local, seasonal goods to bring home. For those of you looking to get your blood pumping (or wear your toddler out before naptime), The Woodlands has more than 130 parks to walk, bike, play, and explore. There are even plenty of spaces to let your fur-family enjoy the fresh air!

Spring

Ahhh, spring. The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the bugs are, well, everywhere. But you know what? It’s magical! This is the perfect season to get outside for those long walks, backyard picnics, and nature scavenger hunts.

  • Hit the Trails: Spring is the perfect time to explore The Woodlands Nature Preserve and take a leisurely walk. Bonus points if you bring along a journal to record the flowers, plants, and wildlife that you spot along the way! Let your little one draw their version of their findings as you explore!
  • Rodeo Season – Don’t forget to log those outdoor hours at your family-friendly outings! The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has a large outdoor carnival filled with fair food, rides, and games. Plus, when you need to escape into the AC, it’s readily available! You’ll pass the time without even realizing it – unless you’re waiting in line for the restroom, then you might. For a more local option, the Montgomery County Fair and Rodeo offers a similar experience on a smaller scale!

Summer

Okay, let’s get real for a second. Montgomery County summers? INSANE. It’s like living inside a blow dryer on high heat. But don’t worry—we’re not backing down from this challenge, because we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves to make those summer hours count. Always be sure to  hydrate and stay cool, Tiny People Families!

  • Water Play, Water Play, and More Water Play: Kiddos + water = happiness. Turn your backyard into an oasis with sprinklers, kiddie pools, or even water balloons. Let them splash until they’re prune-y, and you’ll rack up hours without even realizing it. Bonus! Did you know that there are 14 pools and six spraygrounds in The Woodlands? These amenities can be enjoyed all season long! Just apply for a pass with The Woodlands Township and get ready to cool off in style!
  • Early Morning Walks: Get outside first thing in the morning when the temperature is bearable. A stroll around the neighborhood or to the park with a cup of coffee in hand (for you, not the kiddos) can be a great way to start the day. Plus, research shows that spending just 20 minutes outdoors in the morning sunlight can boost mood and increase vitamin D levels, which are essential for immune function and bone health.

Fall

Fall is, of course, the sweet spot for outdoor adventures in Texas. The leaves are starting to change (well, sort of), the weather is cooler, and the little ones will be full of energy for all the seasonal activities.

  • Pumpkin Patch Visits: This one’s a no-brainer. Take those kiddos to a local pumpkin patch for some classic fall fun! They’ll love picking out their pumpkins and many local pumpkin patches are packed with family fun activities. Be sure to check out P-6 Farms in Montgomery and Old Time Christmas Tree Farm in Spring.
  • Fall Festivals: Our area is filled with fall festivals that celebrate the season. Keep an eye out and you’re sure to find hayrides, corn mazes, and so much more! You can go ahead and mark your calendars for the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival and the Montgomery Fall Fest

Wrapping Up: One Hour at a Time

Remember, it’s not about perfection. It’s about spending quality time together outside, breathing in the fresh air, and making memories that will last. Whether it’s a quick walk to the park, a fun water day in the backyard, or a family trip to a local festival, the 1,000 Hours Outside Challenge is all about giving your kids the opportunity to grow and explore in nature.
